OUTLURE is a proof-of-concept project developed in Unreal Engine 4 with a team of producers with minimal UE4 experience. The project was designed around capturing the variety of mechanics that could be tied to a single verb: lure. The project features a modular set of AI enemies that will track a player character and can be outwitted in various ways. Human enemies can be distracted by using sound (via yelling), lights (via switches), or simply by running in front of them and hiding in bushes to lose their trail. Animal enemies can be lured by throwing or carrying dog treats, which can be dropped from dispensers located across the map. OUTLURE allows developers to take these enemies and their AI behaviors and instantly slot them into their own UE4 projects.
Aidan O'Keefe worked as one of the primary programmers on the project and was responsible for the animal AI, dispensers, and the hierarchical human AI. Aidan primarily contributed to creating the treat system and ability to throw and drop treats, while also creating the dispensers and their UI. He was also in charge of merging the variety of human AI systems into a single cohesive AI and produced the trailer for OUTLURE, which can be viewed below.
